A New Hampshire teen has become a transgender contender to win the local Miss America pageant. Brían Nguyen, 19, won the pageant on Sunday night and became Miss Greater Delhi 2023, the winner of which will receive a laurel, a title and a scholarship. Brian Nguyen announced on Instagram that in Miss America’s long history, I have officially become the first transgender champion within the Miss America organization. There are no words to describe what it was like to have the opportunity to serve and speak to my community for the absolute first time at Miss New Hampshire, Brian Nguyen continued. I am honoured to be crowned your Miss New Delhi 2023 and I am delighted to show you what I have. It’s going to be an astounding year.
The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Program was established in 1986 and, according to its website, provides scholarships to young women aged 17 to 24 living in the Greater Derry area in recognition of their extraordinary achievements in academic health, character and community service. The Miss Greater Derry Scholarship Pageant is also an important occasion for the Miss New Hampshire and Miss America pageants. While some took to social media to celebrate Nguyen’s beauty pageant victory, others criticized the contest online for depriving a young woman of a scholarship.
Who is Brian Nguyen?
Brian Nguyen has become the first transgender person to be crowned Miss America. He was named Miss 2023, earning him a crown and a scholarship, it was reported on Sunday. Scholarships are offered to ‘young women’ between the ages of 17 and 24 through the Miss Greater Delhi Scholarship Program. I’m Brian Nguyen, I’m 19 years old and currently a freshman at Nashua Community College, majoring in business administration and composing for Nguyen on Instagram.
The teen also designated their drive called #QueensAreEverywhere. It’s a media movement to help the next generation build confidence, understand their true abilities, and become leaders of their destiny, Brian Nguyen explained.
Brian Nguyen’s win at Miss Greater Delhi 2023 sparks online debate
While some praised Brian Nguyen’s success on social media, others denounced the competition for depriving young women of scholarships. One critic tweeted that if it was a woman, she would not have been able to pass the entry procedure at any point. Recently, a federal court ruled that the Miss America show cannot be forced to include trans contenders after a trans complainant filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination. A rule of the Miss United States of America pageant is that competitors should be naturally female, and when the complainant contacted the pageant and asked if the rule could be changed, the pageant allegedly declined. “I don’t think someone should be allowed to argue just because they are transgender,” the complainant told NPR. I think it’s very unstable. Transgender women are equivalent to cisgender women. As far as I’m concerned, grand is more than just the way individuals look. As far as I’m concerned, it’s about giving an individual a voice.
