That’s great news for local families who need a little extra help this holiday season.
The Salvation Army in Sarnia will soon be accepting applications for its annual Christmas hamper drive.
Last year, the organization provided toys and food to more than 700 local families. Demand is expected to be even greater this year due to the influx of people using food banks.
Lt. Brad Webster said applicants would need to bring an income statement, IDs and proof of address for everyone in the household.
“If you’re trying to decide whether to put food on the table or provide your family for Christmas, that’s what this program is for,” Webster said. “There really isn’t any qualifications, we’re just trying to be there to help support families in need. If you have a child 17 or under, we do our best to provide them with a toy bag with a food basket so you can Choice. Wherever you need help, we can help you, whether it’s toys or food.”
Webster said they couldn’t have done the campaign without the support of the community.
“All the donations we receive from the community throughout the year, especially those related to our red jugs over the Christmas period, go to programs that support the community. Next to our food bank, one of our biggest annual costs is Christmas Hamper Program.”
Those in need can apply at the Salvation Army office at 970 Confederation Street.
Applications will be accepted November 15-18, November 22-25 and November 29-December 2 9am-12pm and 1pm-3pm
Distribution will take place in the third week of December.
