Highway 1 between B.C. and Alberta to close for five days

One of the major transportation corridors between Alberta and British Columbia will be closed for five days as the next phase of a major highway project nears completion.

Highway 1 through Kicking Horse Canyon will be closed April 11 at noon through April 15 at 11:59 pm. All through traffic will travel via Highways 93S and 95, adding approximately 1.5 hours to travel time. Those wishing to continue on Hwy 1 must turn onto Hwy 93 just before Lake Louise, then go north on Hwy 95 at Radium until reaching Golden.

Between 7:00am and 4:30pm, access will be open briefly with pre-arranged permits, escorted by a lead vehicle, and escorts will be provided for school buses and emergency vehicles.

Drivers are being asked to watch out for wildlife, schoolchildren and school buses when traveling on alternate routes.

The Kicking Horse Canyon project, expected to be completed by winter 2023/24, aims to provide a more reliable four-lane route for people traversing Kicking Horse Canyon.

Remind drivers to obey the speed limit in the construction zone and the command of traffic personnel.Updates on the delay are available at driving network.
