Teens encouraged to take ‘Humans of Lambton’ photos

Local teenagers are invited to participate in the local photography competition “Shoot Like You”.

Lambton County Library and Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery [JNAAG] Submissions are being invited from young people aged 13 to 18 until July 9th.

“This is a great opportunity for emerging artists to build their resume and portfolio,” said Vanitia Campbell, public service coordinator for youth programs and outreach.

“In effect, our competition is judged by industry professionals,” Campbell said. “So there will be jurors from the gallery, Sonya Blazek, director of the gallery, Richard Beland, head of the photography program from Lambton College, and McKenna Dickey, a recent graduate of Lambton College’s photography program.”

She said they will select winners in different subcategories and the images will be displayed at the JNAAG exhibit from August to October.

“This year’s theme is ‘The Humans of Lambton.’ So, we asked our photographers to take pictures of people, with their permission of course. We want to make sure that each photo subject is aware that their photo is being taken and that they have permission to submit that subject’s photo. “

Couples and groups are the first subcategory.

“so, [we’re] Ask people to take pictures of groups or couples, but be creative. So instead of just a stiff couple standing in front of a wall, get creative with how the photo is taken. “

Next focus on snap shots or environment photos.

“It’s a photo of people doing something they love. Inspired by their passion. Maybe it’s your grandmother gardening, or your brother playing the guitar, or something like that.”

The final category, Campbell said, is creative, fine art.

“Play around with makeup, costumes, lighting, and digital post-production. So, get out Photoshop or any other kind of photo editing software, and use that.”

Each artist may submit up to five photos online at lclibrary.ca/teenphotocontest Before July 9.

Winning photos will be announced on Friday, July 21, 2023.
