Police arrest suspect in Victoria’s first homicide of 2023

A suspect was arrested on Tuesday on murder charges in connection with an apparent attack last month, according to Victoria Police.

Police responded to reports of an assault at a residence in the 400 block of Chester Avenue on March 6, where they found a 70-year-old man with critical injuries and life-threatening injuries.

Later in the day, a suspect was arrested for aggravated battery after going to a neighboring police station. Police were informed on March 15 that the victim had died in hospital from injuries sustained in the reported attack.

The suspect was arrested for murder on April 4 and is in custody, police said. The VicPD added that no further details would be revealed as the matter was before the courts.

As of Wednesday morning, the province’s court database showed no murder charges under the suspect’s name released by police.

When police responded to the home where the suspected attack took place on March 6, they noticed a potentially dangerous substance inside.

“Out of an abundance of caution, officials have requested the involvement of the RCMP’s Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response Team (CLEAR) to secure the residence,” said a VicPD news release issued Wednesday.

Roads in the area were closed at the time due to the establishment of a security perimeter around the residence.
