Thames River debris removal could temporarily clog traffic in downtown Chatham

Chatham city center will be detoured on Wednesday as crews work to remove some debris that has accumulated in the Thames.

Chatham-Kent police said the Fifth and Third Street bridges will be closed alternately after high water pushed some debris into the bridges.

The Fifth Street Bridge closed at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will remain closed until approximately 11 a.m. or 12 noon on Wednesday.

Shortly after the closure is complete, the Third Holy Bridge will be closed for approximately three hours.

Police advise drivers to plan accordingly and thank motorists for their patience.

Officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservancy expect the river to peak in Chatham on Wednesday after peaking in Thamesville late on Tuesday night.

A flood warning was in place for areas along the River Thames in Chatham-Kent on Tuesday and is expected to remain in place until Friday unless otherwise announced.
