“Complex” dismantling of illegal cannabis extraction lab continues

The complex task of dismantling an illegal cannabis extraction laboratory in south London continued on Thursday.

For the third day in a row, investigators returned to 467 Commissioners Rd., just east of Ridout Street. On Tuesday, a drug lab was discovered inside an upscale residence at the address. Since then, officers in full hazmat suits have been seen working on the scene.

Metropolitan Police said the demolition process was complex, time-consuming and required a wide range of expertise. Residents in the area have been told they will see a large number of emergency services at their homes until the process is complete.

Police were initially called to reports of a disturbance at the home about 12.30pm on Tuesday. They observed potentially hazardous materials and equipment at the scene and called the London Fire Service to assist in determining whether there was a threat to public safety. Hours later, police confirmed that residents in the area were not in danger.

Two people were arrested.

One of the men has been released unconditionally, while the other remains in custody over an unrelated drug and weapons issue, police said Thursday. No charges were brought.

An update related to the ongoing drug investigation will be provided once investigators are able to fully examine all evidence at the scene, police added.
