Letter: Many volunteer efforts go unnoticed

Breaking news: Dog owner picks up dog poop, issues press release.

I know it’s a feel-good story, but as someone whose wife has volunteered for over a decade at many Saanich parks, including PKOLS, I find it a little hard to swallow. My wife put in over 1000 hours for Saanich and picked up countless bags of shit. She has also been jumped on, run over and bitten by dogs while doing the often unpleasant volunteer work.

Has anyone apologized to her? More than once. Did she and her fellow volunteers feel the need to have their photo published in a newspaper to recognize their efforts? Also, no. Forgive me if I don’t think it’s newsworthy for a group of dog owners to pick up dog poop. The bigger story is why all this shit was left by irresponsible dog owners in the first place.
