Fraser Valley’s Brenda Kawasaki recognized as first volunteer for Abbotsford 2023 55-Plus BC Games

Fraser Valley resident Brenda Kawasaki has been recognized as the first volunteer to register for the upcoming Abbotsford 2023 55-Plus BC Games.

April 16-22 is National Volunteer Week, and Games organizers want to honor Kawasaki and encourage others to follow in her footsteps.

The Abbotsford 2023 55-Plus BC Games will be held August 22-26 at multiple venues in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Maple Ridge, Mission, Harrison Hot Springs and Township of Langley.

Kawasaki has been married for more than 35 years and has four children and two grandchildren. She grew up in the Lower Mainland but has lived in the Fraser Valley for over 30 years. Kawasaki has volunteered for over 20 years with Mission Skate Club, BC/YK Division and Skate Canada since her daughter is a figure skater.

She also volunteered at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, Four Continents, Canadian International Skating, National Championships, and many regional and provincial competitions.

“Volunteering at the Olympics has been another adventure to share with my friends,” she said in a release. “I love meeting people of all ages, working, studying, and just being together and laughing. It’s a win-win situation for all parties. I’m 57 and can’t imagine life without volunteering. Volunteering allows you to build confidence and camaraderie, give back to your community and most importantly, you get to learn, grow and meet new people Chance for a friend.”

The Abbotsford Games will be the 34th and will feature 3,500 entrants from 12 regions across the province.

The Games will coordinate approximately 75 to 80 volunteer seats and 12 volunteer directors. An estimated 1,500 more volunteers are needed to plan and host the Games. The 55-Plus BC Games will feature 29 sports and special events, including opening ceremonies and certifications, in which volunteers can participate.
