Wednesday (April 12) is National Grilled Cheese Day, and it’s time to practice the art of pulled cheese.
Simple or complex, Canadians love it for their gooey grilled cheese sandwiches.
Of the 2,002 adults who answered an online survey last summer, 20 percent liked grilled cheese. It ranks second only to chicken, according to a poll by YouGov, an international online analytics organization.
“It’s fun to see Canadians choose simple, popular options for their sandwiches, like chicken and cheese. These versatile ingredients are often loved by all ages and are great family-friendly options,” says Canadian Recipe Box Subscribe A spokesman for the service Chefs Plate said at the time.
While still simple, the Parmigiano Reggiano Alliance believes that a well-crafted grilled cheese naturally has the character of Parmesan.
It is a naturally lactose-free cheese that can be used in a number of different ways, the group says.
Suggestions for elevating the ultimate grilled cheese include spreading Parmesan on bread, adding it to the center — alone or mixed and oozing with other cheeses — or using it with vegetables for “upscale” sandwiches.
In greater Victoria, the occasion also means a fundraiser, with sticky sandwiches served along with homemade ketchup and warm tomato soup.
Each year, Charelli’s Cheese Shop and Deli in Oak Bay celebrates National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day by donating sandwiches ($6 suggested) to raise money for the British Columbia ALS Society.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease that attacks motor neurons, which transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles of the body. ALS can strike anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender or race.
The ALS Society raises funds for research and provides direct support to patients, their families and caregivers.
Charelli’s is celebrating National Grilled Cheese Day on April 12th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
