Port Lambton swimmer named Western’s top female athlete

A Port Lambton swimmer has been named Western University’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Shona Branton received the honor Thursday at the 82nd Annual Broncos Athletic Awards Gala, recognizing the school’s top athletes for the 2022-23 season.

Brandon finished first in the 50 breaststroke at the Ontario University Athletics Conference (OUA) and first in the 100 breaststroke at U SPORTS. She also placed second in OUA’s 4×100 medley relay and 4×50 relay.

A former member of the Sarnia Rapids swim team, Branton was named an OUA First Team All-Star and First Team All-Canada by U SPORTS for her accomplishments.

At a media conference, Brandon said swimming is often overlooked because it’s not a very popular sport.

“It’s fantastic to win this award and bring awareness to our team,” she said. “We worked really hard all year and had our longest season training from September to March. I’m very proud.”

Brandon attended Wallaceburg District High School.
