Portable defibrillator snatched from St. Thomas park

St. Thomas police are appealing for anyone who stole an automated external defibrillator (AED) from a city park to return it.

Police said on Monday the life-saving device was stolen from Burwell Park over the long weekend.

Taking an AED soon after cardiac arrest can significantly increase a heart attack victim’s chances of survival. The device sends an electrical current to the heart, causing it to re-establish a normal rhythm. Portable machines typically cost around $2,000 each.

“We encourage those responsible to return this life-saving device,” police said.

Anyone with information about the theft is also asked to contact police at 519-631-1224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
