City sets sights on next phase of Cabana Road improvements

Work on Cabana Road between Dominion Boulevard and Hwy. 3 is coming to a close later this month, and the City of Windsor is looking eastward and at the next phase of construction.

For the next phase, Phase Five, to begin in 2024, the City of Windsor must begin planning, finalize the design and begin early engineering work on the stretch between Sixth Concession Road and Walker Road.

On Tuesday, Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens touted the work so far.

“Windsor is growing rapidly,” he said in a release. “Our new EV battery manufacturing plant, regional emergency hospital and international bridge are in various stages of planning and construction. With $106 million invested in road and sewer projects like this in 2023 alone, we will continue to ensure our A thriving economy gives residents access to safe and efficient transportation for current and future needs.”

In phase four, the city spent nearly $19 million to expand Cabana Road West from two to four lanes, install wider sidewalks and bike lanes, upgrade water and storm sewer lines, and add a new right-turn lane on Hwy . 3.

Next, the city will focus on improving the east end of Cabana Road.

Traffic along Cabana Road East may increase significantly once the new hospital on County Road 42 opens. By 2026, the project’s shovel should be in the ground.

“Planning and design activities have begun regarding the continued expansion, further east of Walker Road, where the Cabana becomes County Road 42,” the city’s release said.

The utility lines are now being relocated so that the next phase of construction can begin.
