In terms of fundraising per capita, the Dresden Terry Fox Run once again tops all running events in Ontario.
Organizers announced the news on their Facebook page Friday, saying the Dresden run also ranks in the top 20 in Canada in terms of total revenue raised.
In 2022, the Terry Fox Run in Dresden raised a total of $70,000, a large part of which was raised after the event. As of September 20, 2022, the organization has raised just over $51,000, but more donations are expected to pour in.
“We’ve done it again in Dresden – #1 fundraiser per capita and we’re in the top 20 in Canada for total fundraising revenue!” Read the post. “This city is unstoppable! Thanks again for all the support – we can’t wait to get going in 2023, so stay tuned!”
The run in Dresden takes place on September 18, 2022, with contributions from firefighters, individuals and several businesses to help raise funds for cancer research.
“We are speechless here – can you believe it? We are so proud of our local Terry Foxers and this amazing community for reaching this incredible milestone!” said the organizers.
This year’s run will take place on September 17, 2023. The event is held each fall in more than 650 communities across Canada.
On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his Hope Marathon after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma and having his leg amputated above the knee. On September 1, 1980, he was forced to stop when the cancer recurred in his lungs, but not before he could cover the 5,373km. Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.
“We continue to host our annual Terry Fox Run surrounded by messages of love, hope and inspiration from Canadians everywhere,” the Terry Fox Foundation said.
